Animals come in all shapes and sizes, and they all deserve to have the love, care, and necessities of life. Unfortunately, this is not a reality for all of them, but there are passionate activists that are making a difference across the country. The organizations featured here do an amazing job of saving and protecting these animals so that they can have happy and healthy lives.
Their story hasn't necessarily been for the faint of heart. Austin Pets Alive! was founded in 1997 by James Collins and Judy Ford and they began when vulnerable, homeless pets truly needed them the most. When they were first imagined, Austin had a kill-rate of 87% – today, they have a save-rate of 97%. Through hardships, they found inspiration; and through this inspiration, they have saved lives. Learn more about their journey to becoming - and maintaining their status as – the largest No Kill city in the country by clicking here.
Underdog Rescue, MN was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. They have placed more than 12,000 dogs and cats into loving homes. They could not have done so without the help of their wonderful fosters, veterinary care partners, and community partnerships. Their organization does not have a facility to hold these animals while they wait for forever homes. It is because of the generosity of those people opening their homes, offering their resources and skills that they are able to work together to save the Underdog! The Animal Foundation, founded in 1978, is one of the highest volume single-site animal shelters in America. Much like a public hospital, as an open-admission shelter, The Animal Foundation takes in every animal who comes to them in need, no matter how sick or injured. From the expected dogs, cats, and rabbits, to pigs, chickens, and exotic animals, they serve them all. Their mission is to save all healthy and treatable animals in the Las Vegas Valley, and last year they saved over 15,000 lost, homeless, and often mistreated animals.
